out for while - looking to get back in
« on: Jul 30, 2009, 10:29 »
I'm a former Navy Nuke looking to get back into the field.  The thing is that I got out in 1987.
I was an ET Nuke who served on the USS Enterprise and qualified RO, SRO, control equipment operator, and control point access watch.  Also attended quality assurance school in Bangor, WA.  I was an E-6 when I left.
I got my BS degree in Education right after then and since then taught a bit before moving into the Information Technology field, first as a trainer and then into technical support and network administration.  I've been in IT for eleven years now.
So, can anyone estimate at what my chances are in getting employment in the nuclear field?  I'm looking for some general direction if there is a chance.
Thanks, Jeff

Depending upon what you have done since you got out - should be able to compete for jobs now.

I mean, if you moved to a mountaintop and talked to God under the influence of peyote, you may have some problems.  ;)

But you have a technical background, and experience, albeit a bit rusty. Should be able to get a shot at AO, maybe I&C. If you just want to get your feet wet, try Bartlett or Atlantic for an outage or two - Sun technical does I&C types also. There are others.

Read the other posts on getting back into the business. There are many others that have done this. Slightly different situation, but getting back in none the less....

If you want to catch the fall outage season, get hot - it's staffing up fast. Otherwise you'll be waiting till January for work - remember, there is a 3 month or so lead time for outages......

Good luck   ;D
Remember who you love. Remember what is sacred. Remember what is true.
Remember that you will die, and that this day is a gift. Remember how you wish to live, may the blessing of the Lord be with you
