New Career Path

I am currently a Full-Time 911 Dispatcher and also a Volunteer Firefighter and an EMT-B.  I am applying for a Radiation Protection Technician at a local power plant and I am just wondering if my background would be a favorable fit for the job?  I am very intrigued about the Nuclear field and would love to land this job.  I have a year of Electrical Engineering Technology classes and 2.5 years or organizational management classes for college experience. I am 15 credits shy of my BA. I have certifications in HazMat Operations and Incident Management as well.  Can anyone give me any insight on if I stand a chance getting in? I've also hired a professional resume firm to help me and 3 of my references are either current or retired nuke workers at the plant where I am applying.

   If your experience and education are what you have presented, probably not unless they are looking for entry level people. What were the job posting requirements?

   Check the job posting for your answer or call their HR department. Sorry I could not be more encouraging but if that is what you are interested in you may want to look into taking some courses. Look at the training material on Nukeworker that may tell you if you want to persue it.

Required:

--High School Diploma or educational equivalent, including chemistry and Mathematics courses
--Ability to pass pre-employment testing
--Ability to work different shifts
--Ability to receive unescorted Nuclear access
--Excellent communication, teamwork and organizational skills

Preferred:

--Associates degree or equivalent in Radiation Protection, Health Physics or related field
OR
--High School Diploma and 2 year professional work experience in Radiation Protection, Health Physics or equivalent
OR
--6 years Navy Nuclear experience, including Engineering Lab Technician (ELT) qualifications

Sounds like ANSI 18.1 or an experienced Jr. Technician slot. It does not hurt to try, you may find another path into the facility, it will at least give you a first contact. Look at other positions for the facility there is always room to advance once you are inside the fence at almost all facilities. You may even find one of the other disciplines in the plant more attractive.
