Y-12 Complex Peace Rally
« on: Apr 19, 2011, 06:36 »

I have not seen one of these for a long time. I remember a lot of protests in the 70s & 80s outside commercial nuclear plants especially in New England. I'm trying to remember who they were, the Abalone Alliance I think or was that California. They don't look or sound any different than the protesters I saw back then. The only difference is that there is a lot more respect for trespassing on Federal land occupied by the NNSA, I remember security patiently waiting for protesters to scale the outer fence so they could arrest them. Here there is just a blue line showing the property line, but it seems to be a much better deterrent than a chainlink fence at a commercial facility. Maybe its the armored vehicles with miniguns mounted on top in the background.  ;)

Why do they get to claim the word Peace?

Mothers for Peace, Complex Peace Rally, and I am assuming others too...

What's so peaceful about these organizations? They are disrupting the peace if anything by making noise and spreading ignorance.
And why the masks?

I want the nuclear industry to reclaim the word peace. I mean, the weapons keep us safe and promote peace (Think Mutual Assured Destruction). The air outside of a plant is far more peaceful than the air around a coal plant.
Just a thought [coffee]

that's because all the good ones died in the war. What's your point?

germany is collectively a smarter nation than the USA is my point.

it can be proven.  or rather i can prove that most americans are half wits with a substandard education.

if you don't believe me, drive down to your local Wal Mart and see for yourself or simply turn on your tee vee.  i think dancing with the stars is on

Then why don't you move to Germany or learn something other than teenage texting.

Of course. I would expect nothing less from die Herrenvolk. What with 174,000 known Stasi informants in the population, I have no doubt a Red-Green protest could easily summon up 200,000 bodies to walk in the rain and wish for the good old days of Erick Honecker and driving home in a Trabant.

how's this off subject ?  we're talking about nuke protests.  i am comparing and contrasting germany (the EUs largest economy) vs. the USA.

maybe you should take a refresher course in social studies.

I apologize if my internet message board writing skills are not up to your standards.

i can choose not to capitalize or leave out punctuation if i want to.  this isn't an english class.

lastly i was just playing my part as internet troll when marlin posted on the protest, which was merely bait, in knoxville TN.

If you'd move to Germany, we'd tip the scales a little more in our favor.    :)

Honestly, these people are like the "People of Wal Mart". www.peopleofwalmart.com

You look at them, study them, laugh and shake your head and then click your mouse to the next page.

They aren't doing any harm and they aren't doing any good.

Look at the positive side, at least they are getting out and getting a little exercise....

Years ago while working at Oak Ridge I was talking to guards in the breakroom.  They had some funny stories.  True or not the stories were quite funny.
There was a cloning business which grew plants just below Y-12 down from ORNL.  This company cloned some of the strongest most potent poison ivy which could be found.  Thousands of these tiny plants were plugged in the grassy field right in front of the Y-12 security complex sign in the pictures.  As you know from cutting the grass that as long as poison ivy is constantly cut short the leaves never get bigger than a dime.
The grassy field is always mowed nice and short before any protest.
Just saying. ;)

There was a "Peace Rally" at Lawrence Livermore yesterday.  Apparently it's been an annual event for a number of years.  33 people were cited for obstructing a public roadway, but that was about the extent of it.

Don't worry about disagreeing... that Einstein guy wasn't known for being very smart.

He was physicist not a politician, general, or philosopher. He is also the one who convinced President Roosevelt to build the bomb, not very consistant with the quote. [coffee]

I think I would prefer Teddy Roosevelt's quote:

"Speak softly and carry a big stick;"

I think I would prefer Teddy Roosevelt's quote:

"Speak softly and carry a big stick;"

Actually when he came up with his Theory of Special Relativity, he was a patent clerk, not a physicist (although he was trained as one.)

He also said:

"I am not only a pacifist but a militant pacifist. I am willing to fight for peace. Nothing will end war unless the people themselves refuse to go to war."

And I will strongly disagree with your assertion that he was not a philosopher. He was one of humankind's best philosophers IMHO.

For instance:

"I believe that a simple and unassuming manner of life is best for everyone, best both for the body and the mind. "
"I do not believe in immortality of the individual, and I consider ethics to be an exclusively human concern with no superhuman authority behind it."
"I do not believe in the God of theology who rewards good and punishes evil."
"If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed."
"Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death."
"Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind."
"Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile."
"Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one."
"Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."
"The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.
"The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once."
"The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."
"There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle."

And my favorite Einstein quote:
"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."

If that is not philosophy, what is it?

All quotes courtesy of http://www.brainyquote.com. And there are lots more where they came from.

The government has already decided to build an atomic weapon before Einstein wrote a letter.

The night before he figured out that relativity stuff, he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.
