Well, I don't think you would want to be just an X-ray tech, rather a nuclear medicine tech since this enables you to also do CAT and PET scans--and thus make more money.
Nuclear medicine coursework takes about 12 months depending on the program, and is offered by some community colleges. Additionally, 26 states require licensing, although if you get your certification thru the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board, many of those states accept that as defacto licensing (no exam required). If you have a bachelor's degree in science, you may also be eligible for certification by the NMTCB.
Median salary for this is about 75k, although many openings are per diem (NOT per diem as 'nukeworkers' understand the term).
