For most, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. It's a chance to get a free day off work and school, and a convenient excuse to escape to the shore for the first time of the year. But for veterans and their families, Memorial Day is solemn, it's reflective, and it's a time for them to remember fallen brothers and sisters. The first Memorial Day took place in Charleston, South Carolina. On May 1, 1865, a crowd of African-Americans -- recently freed from slavery -- honored the Union soldiers entombed in the rocky ground of the Charleston Race Course.
I was at an exceptional Memorial Day service today, in memory of our nations Veterans. It was the first Memorial Day service I recall attending. I was there because my daughter made an appearance in their parade, as she is the local Miss Bud Princess. The words spoken at the service were attentive and compelling. My Father was a Veteran. When I buried my father, the part that was most moving was listening to the military rite performed in his honor. We have many Vets on this site. I can not thank you enough for your service to our country. I do not have the words to express the depths of my gratitude.
