Agree an event that caused the demise of our industry is "history", but hardly trivial.

Agree, but with the lack of public education, fear of the unknown, and NIMBY attitudes what is not trivial is the public reaction. TMI was a political, and economic disaster for nuclear but not a public health disaster. Maybe if there were communication specialists then like many politicians and big business have today it may have been different for the future of nuclear power. Public perception is important, does anyone remember Bhopal? It is described as the worst industrial accident in history. 3787 killed and hundreds of thousands injured but it is already forgotten. People live with chemicals every day and can cope with that but radiation and nuclear is an alien concept to many. In the western world people died of stress from evacuations that were not needed and it is debatable if any radiation injuries to the public occurred. So again I agree that TMI was not trivial but what was not trivial was public perception not the accident itself.

What is the worst kind of power plant disaster? Hint: It's not nuclear.

In the article above it's citation for loss of life is:

1986: Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant... Human lives lost: 4,056 (Source for this number: United Nations Scientific Subcommittee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation)

I looked at the report not sure where they got that number.

that's easy,....

47 licensed in the 80s

6 shuttered in the 80s

5 licensed in the 90s

9 shuttered in the 90s

0 licensed in the 2ks,...

0 shuttered in the 2ks,...

1 licensed in the 210s,...

Compared to how many were planned. We have been writing the eulogy since the late 80s

Compared to how many were planned. We have been writing the eulogy since the late 80s

that is a sketchy number,...

about "36" planned but dropped,...

which with strong markets, perceptions and politics would have the USA at a fleet of about 200 today,.....

which would be lot of fission derived gigawatts,....

and jobs,....

but, there you go,.... :-\

in the 50s, 60s & 70s we shutdown 14 and started 81,...

a fair number of those shutdown units were always planned to be shutdown after only a few to several years (the AEC demo reactors),...

the median age for the shutdowns to date is 17 years with an average age of 18 years,....

you don't want to know the numbers for the operating units,...

scary old, or, reassuringly overbuilt, depending on your bias,....

deserves got nothing to do with it,...

there is no "right" to electricity,...

electricity is a government subsidized, regulated, enabled, hindered, promoted, demoted, aborted commodity delivered by private, public-private and fully public sources,....

power companies are not nuclear power companies, they are power companies with nuclear assets,...

At the time it seemed great. No one could foresee the drop in natural gas prices
