The Navy has been transporting spent fuel from nuclear powered vessels for decades. It is transported to the expended fuel facility at the Naval Reactors Facility in Idaho. The facility was next door to the S1W nuclear prototype where I was in training to be a nuclear operator (72) where I had the opportunity to tour it. Soon commercial spent fuel will be transported to a permanent storage facility or temporary storage facility until the permanent one is completed. As usual there is some concern about the safety of transport and the usual NIMBYs. Here is an article on the testing of the shipping casks by the DOE.
I have been retired doing some odd jobs over the last 12 years. One of them was an annual two-week job for ten years as a site safety officer as part of the decommissioning process of Navy fuel casks. Commercial plants are refueled every couple of years but now that submarines are fueled for the life of the ship far fewer casks are needed.
