chain of command

I was wandering if anyone would mind sharing an example or experience where someone mindfully or accidentally "skipped" a few steps within the chain of command process and suffered consequences as a direct result.

Of course that happens.  It's human nature to some extent because some "supervisors" have thinner skins than others.  They feel their egos and/or their self-importance is being threatened.  As for me, I've told my Techs that if they don't like the answer I give them, I fully expect them to "go behind my back" because, ultimately, my expectation for those Techs is to do their best and to do it correctly.  Heck, I make mistakes, too.  On the other hand, some Techs feel the need to go talk to the "big boys" to stroke their own self-importance or through some imagined smoothing of their own career path.  I rely on my management's discernment to understand the difference between me making a mistake and some Tech stroking their personal ego before they drop the hammer on me.

That's very mature of you.
