There are a many reasons that we should all try to live a healthy lifestyle.  Maintaining a low body fat, and an active lifestyle lead to better productivity....PERIOD.  When people join the military they should adopt this philosophy.  The military wants and needs a productive force.

Feel free to make light of my shipmates that are serving on carriers in the gulf.  Or on specop, or doing drug interdictions, or taking great risks to maintain national security.  Those guys need stamina endurance, heat tolerance and the ability to deal with sleep deprivation.  A fit person will be better at it.  PERIOD.

I on the other hand think my shipmates need every edge they can get to keep the ship safe, to recover the wounded plane, or to maintain silence with the oxegen bleed at a minimum....  so low they can barely stay awake.  I will continue to hold my sailors to high standards for fitness.  With the climate in the Gulf right now we are filling billets "IA Billets"  on a moments notice with our bubbleheads, nucs, etc.  These orders come out of the blue for the most part.

I refuse to be put in a position where I am sending one of my sailors over there 40 pounds overweight that cant run a mile and a half in 14 minutes.  I have spent summers in the gulf on carriers and boats alike.  I have lived through the heat.  We had to send several bubbleheads from my last command on IA. One first class in particular spent nine months over there getting shot at and missed.   He was leading convoys up and down the highways dodging mines and taking fire. He came back with a Silver Star, and subsequently made Chief.  I would have felt responsible if his stamina and endurance meant he was not up to the challenge.

For years I was smoking two packs a day, and drinking thousands of empty calories a week.  I later realize I owed it to my family and kids to live a healthy lifestyle.  That was 40 pounds ago.   I have never looked back.

well my 40 yard isnt that good but i'm not waddleing 5.4 40yd

Don't even try to get caught up in the PRT/BF discussion. Its not worth the effort.

Just lose body fat down to the point where you have some definition in your abs, wear 40 inch pants or smaller.

And for poops and giggles, keep working your traps and neck to ensure you have a neck at least 19 inches around.

Trust me.

It's a combination of things.  Definitely eat less, cut out any regular soda if you're drinking that.  Start exercising, knowing that you're not going to do it all at once.  Start out slowly and build up in your activity.  Eat smaller portions, chew longer, don't eat until you're full and before long you'll actually get full quicker.  It's just a matter of increasing activity and decreasing intake.  Not to the point of starving yourself, just to the point where you take in less calories than you burn each day.  It's helped me lose 40 pounds since Christmas last year and it'll work for you too.

If you have to have soda, then drink diet.  One friend of mine made no other change than that and lost 10 pounds within 3 weeks.  The best route is to eventually get off of the soda altogether.  I didn't say it'd be easy, just possible.  You can do it.

Here is a post I made on the same subject for another kid trying to get in. It is quoted word for word. It is my advice and opinion. Good luck.

Step 1... put down the fork.
Step 2... push away from the table.
Step 3...  Turn off and put away the video games/computer/TV and go for a walk for about an hour. Do 50 pushups a day. They don't have to be all at once. 10 in the morning, afternoon, evening, etc.
Step 4... after walking about an hour everyday for a week, start jogging for 20 minutes everyday, walk the other 40. Increase pushups by 25.
Step 5... After jogging for about 20 minutes everyday for about week, increase by 10 minutes. Increase pushups by 25.
Step 6... Continue the above trend until you are running for 60 minutes EVERYDAY and doing 100 pushups EVERYDAY... maybe take 1 day off... MAYBE.

Feel free to do other cardio besides running like swimming, biking, rowing, stairs but do 30-60 minutes of SOMETHING every freakin day. You don't have to be bored when you work out. But, if you aren't moving 30-60 minutes a day most days of the week, then you aren't serious about weight loss or your health. Remember, you have to burn 3500 excess calories to burn 1 pound of fat... IT AIN'T EASY!

You should do some light weight training 3 times a week too, eventually. You don't have to do that "focus on arms" bullshit either like some people at the gym will tell you to do. You want a whole body work out 3 times a week, unless you want to be a body builder. Then you can "focus on chest" or whatever.

Other ways to get exercise is park as far away from work/school as possible, take the stairs, etc.

As far as food... stop eating fast food. All of it. If you are eating it more than 1-2 times per month, then you are not being serious about weight loss and your health. Eat healthy snacks like fruits and vegetables. There is no limit! Eat em when you are hungry anytime you like! Cut out ALL TRANS FATS, ALL HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, ALL HYDROGENATED (partially, or otherwise) OILS. Those three things alone are responsible for American obesity (besides extreme laziness). SO start reading labels. Eat more fish and white meat like turkey and chicken. NOT PROCESSED food. It has to be real (not mechanically separated, etc) and you have to cook it. Limit red meat to 2/week max. Eat fresh salads a lot. READ THE DRESSING LABEL. 99% of dressings are HORRIBLE for you and have tons of fat. There are some tasty fat free dressings out there now, but still watch out for those three killer ingredients above. Cut out ALL processed/enriched wheat products like white bread, donuts, bagels. Go for whole grain all natural stuff and then limit those to 1-2 servings per day. Nuts also make a good snack in moderation, especially almonds. They have a lot of fat but its all good poly-unsaturated fat. A handful or two will do.

Stop drinking soda and start drinking water... tons of it. At least 16 8 oz glasses per day. It keeps you hydrated and keeps you full.

Thats about it. It seems simple but it is a complete lifestyle change. But there is no secret formula. You simply have to move your body and eat well. No pills, no voodoo, no hypnosis, no fancy gadget is going to help you. You actually have to work. You will be surprised how much better you feel by not drinking soda and eating fast food and can easily drop 10 pounds doing that alone.

Goodluck!

Justin

PS Start taking a multi vitamin. I recommend centrum silver because even though its marketed for older men, it contains stuff to help keep your eyes and prostate healthy and you can never start too early with those things.

Hello, my name is Michael and I am a senior in High School.

At the moment, I am top of my class with a 4.913 GPA (and like a 3.99 un-weighted) and I made a 98 on the ASVAB last year.  8)  (I think if I took it, again I could make a 99)

On Thursday (9/13/07), I have a Navy Recruiter coming to talk to me about being a Navy Nuke and I want to get some advice/guidance from people who have "been there and done that" before I make any decisions.

I have taken and passed both AP Calculus AB and Physics with A+'s and if it weren't for the god forsaken school system I would be taking AP Calculus BC and AP Physics B as we speak.  >:(

I do not want the Recruiter coming here and giving me all this sugar coated crap without the facts!!!

I apologize for not finding the information separately but I am very busy with my schoolwork and have busy weekends with church, school, and stuff relating to the two.

If you really want to go into the NAVY as an officer, I'd look into the NUPOC.

Otherwise, get an engineering degree (NOT engineering technology!), hire on with a nuclear plant, work as a staff engineer for a year and apply for the Direct/Instant SRO candidate when it becomes available.  You might want to co-op or intern with a prospective company.

With all the new plants that are planning to be built in the near future, the need for RO and SROs will be great.

Flintstones  ;D
(I know, I should have resisted...)

Tea sweetened with Splenda is OK, but not as a replacement for water. Drink real water (bottled or tap doesn't matter) for at least half of your fluid intake daily. The other half can be splenda sweetened tea or Crystal Light.

Well being young, I would consult your doctor... because I am in fact... not a doctor. But for adult men, even young ones the centrum silver is great because it has things for your eyes and prostate and you can never start too early for those things. I think... but again I disclaim that I am not a doctor... that you would be ok with this multi vitamin too.

Justin

PS I take about a 8 different things in the morning LOL

I can answer this easily! :-D

Each one of those is answered by this:

"How hard are you willing to work?"

If you are willing to work hard and put the time and effort in to being succesful, you will be succesful.
