« on: Sep 03, 2008, 09:23 »
Yeah, I get to break some electricians' hearts tomorrow! they went from 5.5 to... NINE!!!!

Mechanic types went from 8.0 to 9.0, also going to upset some people I know...

ET's went up... 10.0 to 10.5 (???)  Not many ET's reenlist though
ELT went up to 9.5.

good stuff, especially for those waiting to STAR.... haha, due to the delay I have had, I have garnered an EXTRA 20k on top of my bonus.... thats definently the silver lining here!

Maybe you'll stop being so pessimistic (/doom and gloom) around here then.

"Maybe then you should take back all those mean and nasty things you said"  (Major Pain well sort of the quote) ..... okay maybe not!  :P

BTW ... what is your status 'rat' (aka right) now?  If you don't mind me asking.  You could PM me also if its private.

Good Luck.

still waiting. I had an interview with the RO, XO, and CO about it, and all of them approved of course... now Im just waiting on a clinic (ironically, the earliest date I can go is 3 days after leaving for our month long underway) to prove that my kidneys are functioning properly, and after the results (another 4 weeks waiting), the SMO goes over it with me. IF its all good (decent chance something is wrong :(), then the RHO will approve my TLD request lol.

Too many damn "O"'s -.-

I don't mean to crash your party or anything but where did you get this numbers from??? Because I just read the new SRB navadmin(240/08) in my email and it said 4.5 for surface em (nuc 3384), 5 for sub em(nuc 3354), 6.5 for surface elt (nuc 3386) with a $60k cap. The rest are all a $90k cap with all et (nuc 3383/63) getting 10.5, all mm (nuc 3365/85) with 9 and sub elt (nuc 3366) @ 9.5, all this for zone A reenlistment.

Yeah found that stuff out this morning lol. EM's stayed the same, and I confused myself with the ELT's.

I guess at the end of the day all I really cared about was my multiple going up haha :D

If it's money that's keeping you in - it's a big mistake.
I've been over this a few times but there's a few million reasons waiting for you to get out.
The industry has tons of OT - if its money you're after. Pay your house off in five years, invest the change after that.

The simple truth is - the nuclear power community (military and commercial) are severely understaffed.
So both will work your @ss off.
One will pay you for it.
One won't.

An extra 20k is outage change.

Stay in for love of country, which is a better reason than money.

I love the idea of the Navy, . I have much larger interests then money, and the navy is going to help me with that. Why would I get out and use my GI bill when I can go to prototype and go to college free, then get out and get another degree using my GI bill, or even better, give it to my wife?
Why would I not stick around for two more years so I  can start SRO quals instead of AO quals? (about 60k pay difference a year at the plant I have my eye on). I have thought about this thoroughly!!!

You honestly know nothing about the Commercial Industry. If it came down to money you could start as an AUO and end up about 70 to 90 K a year ahead if you were to get out now, that is assuming you end up as an SRO. The odds are maybe 33% you'll end up with an SRO License at the end of your course, assuming you get hired as an SRO out of the Navy if you don't make it you'll end up as a dead end and. I've yet to see an SRO anywhere make 60K more a year than any AUO and as base pay I've yet to see any SRO Instant position hire in at 60K more than an AUO, average is around maybe 20 K and Utilities do not deviate from the average. You'll work just as many hours, the difference being you have to come in when called and they don't. Odds are in most cases you won't get paid. So if you're basing the monetary side of your thought process on some mythical job offer at a plant in which you've never interviewed you might want to guess again.

Also if you think you'll have time to attend college as either an SRO or SRO Trainee guess again.
I'm not saying you won't but I know the time demands on both jobs and the mental toll they take on a person.

It has been a while since Hydro has wagered quatloos against anyone.

After working a lifetime in the nuclear industry, I have learned to respect the short half life of the genius of youth. I was once a young man equally omniscient and omnipotent. The half life of this phenomenon is 5 years. At 22, I knew everything, by the age of 47 - I knew practically nothing. So - now I appreciate, sitting back, listening, and getting another new lesson.

Too add to what Mike said, there is a lot of stars to align in order for you to get that offer at that plant you have your eye on that might not be looking to hire when you get out, or be looking to hire Navy nukes into SRO jobs when you get out. First, you need to qualify EWS. Are you guaranteed that? You might say you are a hard worker and think you are a shoe in but it is not a guarantee. What is a guarantee is if you do 6 and out and start at AO somewhere, you will make at least two times what you made in the Navy after the first year. And your pay difference is wrong. SROs, in my short experience, often come in under ROs and AOs for money for the year. You might be talking base pay, but when they get paid double time to work on a Sunday or holiday and the SRO doesn't, it adds up fast. Most AOs I know have paid off fica for the year this month.

Second, are you guaranteed to go to PTYPE? And then how do you know you will be able to go to college FOR FREE while there? Exactly what college were you planning on? Is it going to work around your shift schedule?

Too many stars out of order. Maybe that's why they call it STAR reenlistment because at the end of it, you will be seeing stars.
