more troubles getting into navy nuke
« on: Mar 16, 2009, 11:36 »
As my previous post stated, I'm having some very difficult times getting any answers from my recruiters. This is what I've found out, heard so far.

I've been accepted to the navy, but not to the NUKE part yet!!! I am a prior service soldier, and this has been going on since October of LAST year. Over the weekend I had to get some "request for reference" forms filled out. I also had to take the Physical Fitness test. Are these things normal? I don't mind the PT test, or getting more papers filled out, it just feels like they are jerking me around.

I do apologize if I come across as impatient, I'm just looking for answers, and I can't find them anywhere else.

So wait you must.
However, I bet if you went in to the Navy recruiter's office and said "nevermind, the Air Force is willing to put me in tomorrow starting as an E-4 in their electronics program" you might get some movement. (Not that anyone would ever play one service off the other  ;D)
Once in while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right

I can not get into the airforce. They will not take prior service. I suppose I'll just continue to hold off future plans and WAIT.

Yes--PFA is standard while in the DEP program for the navy--Its a baseline just to make sure youre not a complete and total flop.  When it comes to being a nuke recruit...usually they push hard to get you gone quick...youre worth a lot to the navy and to their quota!!

I'm not worth as much to the recruiters though. I don't count as a number for them being as I'm a former enlisted soldier in the Army. I wish they'd push me through faster, but it's not happening, and it's becoming very very frustrating. I'm ready to start working hard towards my future, but they seem to be willing to just WAIT. Oh well. Thanks for the support guys.

Also, I'm under no contract, I haven't signed anything. I'm not even considered a DEP. I only chose ONE job, nuke, not 8 like you are supposed to. I didn't swear in, didn't sign anything. The reason for the PFA was to hope it hurrys the paperwork. They can see I'm fit, take care of myself, and I'm READY to leave NOW. I don't mind doing them. When I was up for promotion in the Army, I had to take one every month for the schools and such.

The ref sheets are normal.  I had to get them done in the past few weeks as well.  The only problem is when they were faxed over seems like they were misplaced and I may have to get them redone.

Fun fun.

Hey, I'm currently a nuke in the navy. depending on how you scored on your asvap, you may have to take an additional test to become a nuke. we just called it the nuke to test. even if you have a high asvap score, you still might have to take it, so ask your recruiter about it. then, if your not getting your results, start being a butt about it. Start going up hes chain of command, asking why the heck your not getting pushed in. Nukes are normally extra points to recruiters to get

Senseless drivel

This is an open forum; your vulgarity (simply for the sake of being vulgar) is unwelcome here.
Learn to capitalize.  Use spell check.
The test you refer to is not the "asvap", nor is it the "ASVAP".

If/when you make the cut. Get used to lots of PFA's, at least during the start of nuke A school. I just started (on week 6) and I've done one every week so far. As for the wait it took my recruiter almost 2 months to get my nuke contract it seems to be the way of the navy hurry up and wait. I would say to give it a bit of time before rushing up the chain of command.

It has been a WHILE since I've checked this forum board. I leave on Wednesday for Great Lakes. It has taken almost an entire year, but I have FINALLY gotten accepted. My date was pushed three different times, but after mentioning the fact that it won't be pushed again, since I simply would back out and take a secondary route I had been lining up if this had failed.

I took the NQFT, or NQFT, or the NUKE TO TEST as you called it. I scored a 60, if I can recall correctly, needing only a 50 to qualify.

Thanks for all the input from the board, and any more that can be posted is welcome.

Good luck to those who are currently in the school, and to those whom still have yet to start. Maybe our paths will cross some day, until then, take care.

Yeah I'm in the same boat as you are. I turned in my package for Nuke around the March 09. And it's getting close to 6 month mark since I turned it in.(I kid you not) Only thing I know about what's going on so far, is supposedly, all the waivers are backed up or something ..

I must have been fortunate. After my ASVAB score, a nuke recruiter walked up to me, took my name, within 2 weeks, a nuke representative came to my station, took the test, within another week, signed my contract.

Yes you must have. I guess it's my run of the luck :]. On average, it's supposed to take about a month, according to my Nuke Coordinator but hey, I'm one of those guys that raise the statistics for length of time. :D

So did you have any waivers that you needed to do Glowing?

I had to do waivers for grade ( while in HS i got tossed into a new class mid - year with a teacher that said oh well and expected me to pass HIS final, so i got a D) So i did the letter things to explain why i got the D and 2 other classes (family death, wasn't around school much), and it still went quick.

My apologies for such a long time between replies. I am currently sitting in Great Lakes, have been since the 7th of August, awaiting word from my detailer about my orders for A-school.

From what I can gather from the others up here, remember, I'm mainly stuck with OSVET AND NAVET (Veterans of Other Services, and NAvy), the length of time it takes to get your contract from the date of your ASVAB test relies solely on how hard the recruiters work for YOU! My recruiter SUCKED, to put it politely and it took me almost a year, but I'm also a prior Army Serviceman and had to go through a few extra steps that most new recruits don't have to. Many of the new nuke recruits up here who I get to talk to are in THU, (Temporary Holding Unit) until a class is being formed up. Of the ones I've talked to, I'd say that only 1 or two of them have what it takes to pass through the course. Most of them are very very immature, egotistical pricks. They think that because they are going Nuke they are better than everyone else. These people are put to work and on duty's far more than those who are laid back and keep their mouths shut.

As for weather the wait was worth it or not, I can not give an honest answer to that question at this time. I have yet to even begin the actual course work or job of a Nuke. So far, after getting my medical and dental records updated, doing a PFA, and being issued my uniforms, I'm stood watch and worked out, but mainly stood watch.

Good luck to those of you pursuing this path of the Military, but remember, just because you are a nuke, don't not make you invincible. Keep your mouth shut, ears open and do what your told, don't do what you think you should do, chances are...it's WRONG.
