Medications and the Navy........

Hello,

When we were accepted at NR Reactors, For some reason, LT asked us, all 20 of us to keep the OR's informed of any medications you start taking.

They mainly mentioned, psychotic medications, depression medications, anything that is related to behavior and brain, ADD, ADHD (Should one develops it) and so on..... It makes sense since we were all MEPS certified from BUMED.

Someone then asked, what about like blood pressure and cholesterol Medications, the LT's didn't have an answer for this, so I am wondering if someone here knows or are currently serving in the Navy with taking some sort of Blood Pressure or Cholesterol medications and shed light on this issue. So I can relay the information back to them.

It is a common and treatable issue, so i assume the Navy is fair in addressing it.

If there is like an official Navy document, that would be great too but i doubt it lists medications, may be there is. Thanks again

Cholesterol and blood pressure medications should be OK.  However, from now on, just make sure the doc you see is aware of those medications that are disqualifying from the nuclear field....don't assume that simply because they're a Navy doc that they know anything about nukes.  Unless your doc is a UMO (Undersea Medical Officer), its best to have them check before prescribing.  There is a recent Naval message (within the last year) that discusses this issue and includes a list of some medications....believe it or not, up until that message came out Tamiflu, one of the flu vaccines, was medically disqualifying!

Yeah there are a lot of meds that will make you unelligible. When I was there not too long ago, they were encouraging students at NNPTC to bring there protien shakes, creatine, and weight gainer type dietary supplements because some of those had crap in them that would disqualify you. It's funny that I couldn't get a prescription to my former meds for ADD that I stopped taking a few years before the navy (which was legal) and then my friend in the army gets busted for pot and they give him a prescription for it. Yep because meds don't help people...

It's fitness for duty not an issue of legality, unless of course they are illegal. I have had to let someone go in the the past for use of prescribed cannabis, it was not something I wanted to do but it was a condition of his employment and he knew the risk if caught.

Where did you "learn" all of that.... as a staff writer at High Times or Rolling Stones ??!?
