Social Life/Just having fun?
« on: Oct 04, 2009, 03:12 »
Hello all. First off thanks for taking the time to read and/or respond to my post. I'm using a semi-broken keyboard so if you happen to spot some typos please ignore hem.

I looked all over and couldn't find a clear cut answer to what I wanted to know. Straight to the point I like to play video games. Whether it be FPS, MMORPGS's etc..... I'm wondering what type of internet connection is available during A- School (DSL, Fiber optics?). Do I pay the bill myself? Also are there any rules pertaining to what type of tv and computer I can have? Basically I'm just trying to ensure I have what I need to continue my hobbies (Although I'm sure the pipeline will keep me rather busy as is).

I started to ask about the social life but I found many post pertaining to that topic so I'm hoping you guys can just help me out here. Thanks a bunch.

Hello, I'm a current resident chez Charleston.

Comcast and Sprint are the only two service providers available at the BEQ rooms, and you must pay your own internet bill.

As far as banned TVs or computers, I haven't heard of anything like that.  Myself, I like to keep my things locked away inside of the furnature for safety and for inspections.  My Antec p-182 fits snugly in the cabinet, which probably won't accommodate any case longer than 20".  Width and height won't be an issue.  Any flatscreen up to 17" should fit fine, and maybe some larger.

No, I've never played Crysis.. but I did look it up after you mentioned it. It seems interesting and I might decide to pick it up.

MMORPGS I've played : Runescape (lol- I was young), WoW (very shortlived), Dark Eden, and the best for last FFXI ( at least 4 years of my life gone).

FPS/TPS: Every Socom out there but currently just Confrontation ( PSN: JVIagnificent), Call of Duty 2 through WaW, Battlefield 2, can't really think of any of others worth mentioning. For those of you who read this and ask where is Halo, just know that I lol'd at thought of buying Halo game.

On a side note I recently got into to paintballing. I'm a gamer but I'm no where near a couch potato. I did some browsing/searching through the forums and found that there is a great field out in Charleston. (Brought a Tippman 98 custom pro w/ ACT- best noob gun you can find yes?)

Also if anyone here plays Socom or FFXI be sure to pm me. It would be nice to have someone whom with I have something in common.

You are correct in that there is a SUPREME paintball field in Charleston, called Charleston Paintball.  I played there several times and usually weekends bring in at least 200 players from all skill levels.  NNPTC and NPTU will do group trips to this field to play.  If you want more specific info, PM me and I will give you the skinny on what I remember(it has been several years since I played, mostly due to knee injury).

Make sure you bring enough buddies to Paintball Charleston to get the group rate (I think it was ten or twenty bucks plus paint).  That way it won't be just you out there getting marked up by ten-year-olds with their 20+ shot/sec angels.

As far as pwning n00bs on the computer I can't stress moderation enough.  The program has its share of pro gamers who can't manage to shower or shave or stay awake in the classroom or on watch.  Being the sleepy kid at work would not only be embarrassing, but it can get you and those around you in deep doo doo.

I always preferred the Staff vs Student games.  It usually ended up being Staff vs. Sitting ducks, but it was all in good fun.  I despised the 10 year olds with guns that were worth more than I made in a month on E6 pay.  Most couldn't play worth a flip, but darn if they aren't hard to hit when they are all of 4 foot tall.

I keep hearing about 10 year old kids with egos, flys/angels etc. Is it really that bad? I may end up "accidentally" taking one of those babies hehehe. That was a joke, but seriously why do these kids have guns like that?

As far as being a pro gamer that doesn't shower/shave, I don't think I'll have that problem.

Just my two cents, but every gamer I knew in the pipeline had trouble with meeting the standard.  A hobby is just a hobby, and as such should be expendable in favor of doing your f***ing job.

Seriously, playing around with videogames and paintball can be cool in moderation, but if you're more worried about how you're going to get your online fix than the rigors of nuke school, then you'd better be real sharp.  Some of us had to actually study to get through.  I was on voluntary hours and still had to put in 30+ hours a week (that's study time after class)to keep my grades up.  I was master-at-arms for my power school section and had to drag two videogames babies to class almost every day, with the expected: unshaved, filthy uniform, BO from not showering, etc.  Don't be that guy.

It's been a while since I've been on the forums. I must admit you guys are hilarious, specifically the "Real men chase girls." I've been packing my stuff up, and clearing my mind getting ready to ship out ( The upcoming Wednesday). I'll definitely keep you all posted on my progress, and thanks for being helpful.  ;)

Just my two cents, but every gamer I knew in the pipeline had trouble with meeting the standard.

I know a lot of gamers who've made it through training just fine.  I, myself, had a nasty little EverQuest addiction in power school and I still managed to graduate top of my section.  Granted, I probably would have done better in grad school had I not been playing WoW, but still...

Also if anyone here plays Socom or FFXI be sure to pm me. It would be nice to have someone whom with I have something in common.

I didn't realize people played FFXI anymore.  :o

If you have a laptop, you can use WiFi in the game room until you get your internet set up.  They also have a couple TVs with game systems that you can use until you get your stuff here.

Gaming can be a great hobby. I wear my Jinx swag to work whenever I get the chance. Its always fun to find fellow enthusiasts and to see their eyes widen in recognition and awe of your class shirt, or whatever your fancy is.

But it never should take importance over being excellent at your work. That is just common sense and maturity.

Yeah, I've decided to keep my gaming at home, I get too carried away. Killed me in college, I'm not going to make the same mistake again. *at the same time my bro whose in A school right now asked me to give him my x box cause hes getting bored*...

Haha, yeah. He's in shape and pretty well mannered now thanks to basic. He's still got his Ego but I don't anything can take that away from him. He's getting enough Xbox time at a friends barracks whose in p-type now, game of choice there is Street Fighter IV. Can't imagine my bro getting carried away, he was never a big gamer after attending karate classes when he turned 14. Plus his SLPO says he is doing so good he's letting him go home for xmas leave*. Too bad 5 days after I leave, he'll be here... O well. Thx for your support =O.

(*Only reason why he is coming home: Originally he was going to take grad leave, but unfortunately my father who works 1.5 hrs away needs someone to take care of his 14 month old daughter. I am watching her at the moment, it sucks cause my recruiter asked is I wanted to leave early.... I could have chosen to go but I decided it was best for me and my father if I stayed. 1. Dad didn't need to hire a babysitter.. 2. I get to spend time with my family. Prior to all this I lived with a roommate a few towns away during college. So I didn't see much of them in the last 4 years. It was a good choice, though my sister suffers from SBBS {stinky baby butt syndrome  aka dirty diapers. LOL.} shes cute and I enjoy most of my time with her, so I don't care.)

I have justified my plan to bring my xbox as an investment in my future, as opposed to a distraction that needs to be thrown out. I figure if I have the 360 at home, I'll be less likely to spend money on gas, outside forms of entertainment, girls I won't meet (I'm married, so that's not applicable to me, but I figure I'd throw an extra arguing point out there.), and anything else that would require me to be social. I can put that extra money into savings, and in forty years when I'm pulling from my retirement, I'll be thankful that I bought the xbox instead of making friends and having life experiences.

Also, I suppose the lack of sun could be beneficial in my fight against looking like a leather sack at fifty. I'd call that killing two birds with one...headshot? I think that's an achievement in Halo  :P

Its not.

I think your reasoning is a bit peculiar, but I can agree that it kept me out of trouble and I didn't spend money other than a couple games a year.

It is a good investment, however for me its pretty distractive.

What day are you going to basic? I'm going on the 16th, and I recall yours being about the same time.

And most of my reasoning was done in jest or sarcastically, it's just hard to convey via internet. The point was I would rather be out doing one thing or another than inside playing video games, but it's a very practical way to wind down and the cost isn't really that bad. Maybe I should have just said that. I'll be much more serious from now on.

If you go to youtube you'll find a lot of videos of students having fun. Most of it is boxing matches or sliding through puddles when it rains, but it looks like if there isn't anything fun around people find something to do. Here's one of the links...

I'm not sure it's the most productive use of time, but it's more than just kids sitting around playing video games.

The Paintball field really interested me. I had played once or twice before but I was 15 and it was too expensive for me at the time. I'd probably go invest some time on that during the weekends. Weekdays ill probably make extra time to workout and/or play some online games.

And yeah, we will be on the same ship, I leave on the 14th/15th too. I met some people on face book, they go the same day as well.

Keep on playing boys...soon some one else will be mowing your lawn...

British tennis star Andy Murray has been having relationship problems of late. Unlike Tiger Woods, Murray hasn't been spending too much time with other women, however. He's been spending too much time on his Playstation.

Murray, the No. 4 ranked player in the world, was dumped by his long-time girlfriend Kim Sears due, in part, to the fact that he spent up to seven hours a day playing video games.

Win.
