Got F in high school need waiver?

Hey im interested in joining the nuke program.  Everything is fine but I got a F in Algebra 2e (honors in high school).  But then the next year I took math analysis and got a B then I went to community college and got a B in calculus.  So is this "ok", can I still get in? And do I need a waiver for it?  And can we change our job after we sign contract at MEPS? Recruiter told me that I could still go to MEPS and get a contract and then change it while waiting to be shipped out, although that doesnt make sense to me because they ship you out based on what job you got... but anyways any information would be helpful thanks.

   When I joined, I had the same thing happen to me. In the end I needed five waivers in total (my teen years were not spent wisely), but I still got what I needed and got into the Nuke program.

  My recruiter also told me that I should sign up under a different contract, and that they could change it while I was in DEP. Now in my case, I was really just looking to join the Navy and wanted to go Nuke because it's what they needed (only later did I find out it was exactly what I needed too). I signed, they contacted me, and then I signed a new contract to be in the Nuke program. I later found out that I was the exception in these scenarios and not the rule.

  My advice is not to sign anything that you are not ready to commit to. That waiver is not difficult to get, and they will hunt it down for you in order to get you to sign on the dotted line. If you sign a different contract, and they decide that it's good enough just to have a warm body fill a position, then you could be stuck with the rate you've committed yourself to. My point is, signing that contract does absolutely nothing for improving your chances for getting into the Nuke program, and may actually be a detriment. If you won't be happy being a Fire Control Technician or Torpedoman then don't sign up as one.

Signing at MEPS the 1st time means nothing. If you don't get what you want then don't ship out.

I earned a "D" in high school algebra. But earned a "B" in algebra at ASU. I easily got the waiver. Obviously you situation is a little different, but i think it's similar . I wouldn't recommend signing a contract you don't want. While you can legally and easily get out of it (as long as you do so before the day you ship), in my mind it's a violation of your word and not a good thing. Ask your general recruiter to let you talk to the nuke recruiter in you area, he might be more helpful. Your recruiter's goal is to get you to RTC your nuke recruiter's goal is to get you to Charleston. It doesn't sound like your recruiter is being dishonest, but I recommend getting help from the guy who has the same goals as you.

"I got an F" is incorrect. The correct way to express your sentiment is to say you, "received an F." The correct way to think of it is you, "earned an F."
For example I earned two F's at ASU because I slept in and didn't show up to class. Key point: "earned."

Yeah but I didnt do anything, nothing, so I just got the F, I didnt do anything to get it.... (just messing )  But yeah, I just wanted to get to bootcamp get this rolling, so I was thinking of just signing a contract then changing it, but I think I will just wait for the waiver and do things right.

The Navy will tell you everything you need to go nuke and if you qualify. Qualify does not mean graduate, that part is up to you. You just have to ask yourself if you are dumber than the thousands of people that have already been through the program. You should say your are not, then all that's left is your effort level. It was rare to see someone bust their butt and not make it. It was more common to see people do enough to not be in remediation, which was 2.8 when I went through.

As far as the person referencing their ASU background, forget it, ASU has a 92% acceptance rate. If you can park your car and unbuckle your seat belt, you passed the entrance exam

Yea i had a similar scenario.  I had a D in high school functions of analytical geometry my sophomore year, and I personally, did have to get a waiver passed.  Also, in order for the waiver to be passed, they asked me to take the NAPT despite my 96 on the AFQT.  I'm not really sure if your college grades will really help you because one of the first questions my recruiter asked me was, "Have you EVER failed ANY math classes before."

I'm not too arrogant to have not learned something with some of the finest Mess Specialists my submarine offered.  They cared about the crew, did the best job they could given the budget and logistical constraints, and were sincere sailors.  I attended some of their Divisional training, which is where I learned how to make very good gravy at Thanksgiving.

However, I knew a few arrogant "nukes" that thought poorly of them, treated them poorly, etc.  I can neither confirm nor deny any knowledge of the bodily fluids or hairs that were "inadvertently" consumed by the most egotistical of nukes.   Especially those in the Wardroom.

Don't make enemies with the people that feed your or control your pay.  You, Nuke, will lose in the long run.

When I went to school my generation realized grades mattered.   Too many today don't think of their long term future, party now, tomorrow we may die.   I am glad the Navy has a waiver program.  In my day way back while "Nam" was going on you did well to avoid the draft or went in voluntarily to have some choice to not be a target on the battlefield.  We don't have the same incentive with an all voluntary force.
