PBS' "Carrier" - Comments?

Personally, I found Carrier life very off-putting (based solely on this program).  I am not interested in spending my time among immature sailors (nukes excluded, I hope) in berthing, in the mess, and everywhere else.  I am also not very interested in meeting new people every day for 6 months.  
I would, however, enjoy the open spaces on a carrier, and 5-section duty (or better).  Also, knowing the whole crew would be better imo.  
But what do I know.  I am 25 and am still waiting to get shipped to boot camp.

Reactor Departments tends to be just as "immature" as the rest of the ship if not more. Overall it's like a high school. The program "Carrier" is the probably the most accurate documentary that has been done on CVN life. Every once and a while I will watch some of it to remind me of the worst five years of my life.

I believe my last two sentences sufficiently pulled the rug out from under my own non-existent basis.  If not, my apologies.  I never meant my opinion to thought of as qualified.

Still, I think discussion about such an in depth and highly publicized look at carrier life is worth the effort.
And what is up with the vicious NUB hatred?  Must not we all learn to crawl before we can run?  (More NUB talk i guess)

Dude - grow some depth to your skin.  That comment doesn't even meet the level of minor displeasure.  If you can't take some good natured (or even mean spirited) ribbing, you're in for some tough times ahead.  Half of what gets said in normal conversation in the fleet is meant to get under your skin.  

That's the thing that the film makers missed about the Navy experience.  To me, the whole PBS thing was about the sexual tension and very little else.  'Course, when most of us on this site were in, there wasn't any sexual tension underway.

Well at least not on a Carrier right?  There is the old adage of "75 couples come back up" to deal with on Subs.

And yeah, don't fool yourself.  Fast and black, and never come back.  It's not the glamor, it's a lot more work, but you know you can trust the guy next to you.

Not so much on the trust there, pal.  Not when you've been on a boat with thieves.  Not when E-Div's chief steals your knife right off your damn poopie suit and lamely claims it was sitting between the TGs.  Not when wallets and laptops go missing on an underway and the command drops the ball.  Even when you collar the damn thieving SK and drag him into the goat locker. 

Didn't get to see the show, but I remember joking about what would happen if they ever made a show about sub life.  They'd have to blur out just about everything and bleep out half the words.  A phrase comes to mind, "What has been seen cannot be unseen."  Yeah, I wish I could unsee quite a few things I saw underway...

Only had to deal with one thief on two boats.  He got his, believe me.  The rant the COB gave on the pier made most of us blush.

And comparison between submarines and surface--there is none.  No way, no how.  I trusted the guy wearing fish.  The guy on the tender, whether he was wearing water wings or not?  Not so much.

We had a shore power cable catch fire on the pier when I was on a tender for radcon duty.  I popped the shore power breakers to deenergize them (after I called away the fire to the Q-deck and told the SCPO OOD what I was doing.)

The MR1 EDO (Sailor of the Year, BTW) comes up and starts chewing my ass, wondering where the hell did I get the authority, what was I thinking, etc., etc., etc.  When I asked him what ****ing box of Crackerjacks he got his water wings out of and asked him what the FIRST action was for an electrical fire, he still wouldn't let up, and orders all but the faulty cable energized "so that they can overhaul the fire".  Only when the poor bastard handling a METAL pole caused an arc and nearly killed himself (and had he been on bare conductor, he would be dead) did the light over the MR1's head go off.

This is the kind of mentality I ran into more often than not in the surface fleet.  Hence my "trust" rant.

That particular rating was designated "MR" for a reason. On surface ships, they are the rate that can never quite get those CHT check valves fixed. You don't have to be below the thermocline to have a pressurized brown trout fishing derby

@NHSparky:  I had worse luck with commands.  My second boat would have keelhauled the bastard and my first boat covered for him.  Go figure.

Not surprised by your experience with the tender pukes.  Half of the turds on the Cable couldn't walk and breathe at the same time.  SKs on that garbage scow kept trying to give me expired chemicals.  Went through their berthing to get to the stores lockers and saw the lounge where they were playing Playstation on a duty day.  Felt like the CO from the boat in Das Boot when he was meeting the high command in their opulent headquarters.  My head damn near exploded.  They chuckled and joked about spinning up another bubblehead. 

@HydroDave:  You owe me a keyboard.  BTW, neither PHNSY or IMF San Diego can read a torque wrench.  Scary things happen to feed header check valves when they're only torqued to a tenth of the spec...  brown trout fishing derby, man that's classic.

How many "dinosaurs" does it take to squash an ant?  Hmm...let's have someone excited, energetic, enthused about joining the Navy find out.  All they have to do is start or participate in a discussion here, which someone with not much more experience determines to be crap.
