Navy NROTC, Chances of landing a DC interview
« on: Apr 10, 2013, 08:11 »
Hello everyone,

I'm new here, but I've been rooting around in the forums quite a bit.

I'm currently enrolled in the NROTC program. I'm on a 5 year program and I'm finishing up year 3. Current cumulative GPA is a 3.15 in a Mechanical Engineering degree.

Here is my dilemma:
I have a heavy desire to be a submarine officer. It's the sole reason I joined the program and took the NROTC scholarship. All was well until my last semester. I had a 3.31 GPA and was confident in my ability to land an interview. However, last semester turned out to be really bumpy for me. I made a D in Numerical Methods and a C- in Thermo I and ended up with a semester GPA of 2.50, dropping my cumulative to 3.15. I'm working hard this semester to make up for it but I'm flirting with 3.0 semester GPA. I got all A's and a B, but my Thermo II prof is slaying me and I'm expecting a D or an F. I'm retaking Numerical Methods and Thermo II next semester to fix the problem.

My Navy advisers say I still have a shot but not a great one, while I have fellow Midshipmen assuring me that I'll be fine.

Calculus and Physics grades are as follows:

Calc I: B     Calc II: B     Calc III: C      DifEq: B-

Phy I: A     Phy II: B

I'm almost positive that if I have another slip up then I'm screwed. My next semester I hope to make at least a B or higher in my retake classes. It should boost my GPA back up a bit.

Anyone have any idea if I'm even competitive at this point?
Also any advice for NROTC Mids seeking Nuke? I see loads of info for NUPAC and USNA but nothing relevant to ROTC kids.

I never interviewed anyone with a D or worse on their transcript.

Cheers,

Thanks,

I know that I definitely won't score one with a D. Once I retake the courses then my grades will be replaced. There have been several other Midshipman in my unit fail courses but they retook them and made a C or better and got pick up for nuke.
I'm not sure if the class shows up twice of if it's just replaced.

Absolutely do what you can to get your grades up, but I interviewed someone with a D on their transcript today, and they got into the Program.  Your results may vary.

No. You get an "R" next to the grade on your transcript. On the back your transcript will explain that "R's" aren't used in their GPA calculation. People will still see it.

Thanks guys,

I'm glad to get information from other sources than just inside my unit. Part of me wishes I would have just enlisted or attempted to get an easier major. Then I could have enlisted nuke or had a better opportunity. It kinda feels like engineering majors get the short end of the stick. A political science major with higher grades appears to have better chances than an engineer that's a little rough around the edges.

You're on crack if you think a polysci degree is better than an engineering degree for anything other than trying to work for a politician.
