One grid to rule them all

Not sure how this will affect nukes, most of the commentary is about wind power but it would seem that anything that affects power distribution has some impact on nuclear.

One grid to rule them all: Is a national transmission system coming to America?

Problem being, if one of the DC converters drops a 5000 MW transfer from Texas wind to Eastern Interconnection, frequency moves to about 59.9 and no one cares. Drop a 5000 MW sale from Eastern Interconnection to the Western Interconnection on a low gen/low load day in spring or fall, and you could see interconnection frequency plunge to 59.5 or less, which would start trip timers on major generating stations and possibly slide into underfrequency load shedding. Then again, the "smart grid" will just turn off lots of neighborhoods like yours and mine to balance things out. Not my idea of reliability, but greeeeeeen power has its costs  ;)
