Interesting. Short-sighted perhaps, but interesting.
The Apollo program had very little real payback in performing the task but the gain in knowledge and technology achieved by the effort has helped transformed the way we live and raised the living standards of most of the planet. Hyperbole? Maybe a bit, but there is no denying the benefits even given the cost.
Will fusion (or more specifically the Tokomak) ever be our main power source? My bet is that we will eventually be able to do what Tesla predicted (or maybe even performed) and our energy needs will be either solved or at least lessened... but I will never see either of these, and probably neither will anyone currently alive (unless certain medical breakthroughs happen very quickly.)
