Was this really metal drummed 30 year old rocky flats or actually some other more recent INL process waste? The likelihood of a solvent containing drum drum with sludge not being in an overpack or drum-transferred seems highly unlikely.

More like 50-60 year old Rocky Flats waste. Most of the drums had a 5 mil polyethylene liner inside. A history of RWMC....

Interesting - thanks. The liners don't last forever and I'm not a waste expert. I wonder what the change-out schedule is.

the biggest problem is that no really knows everything that is in the drums. easy to be surprised under those conditions.

SWIMSDWI. Stop-Warn-Isolate-Minimize-Secure-Deal-With-It. Look on the bright side - if it was fissionable/fissile material, it is currently not in a critical geometry.
