I knew there were a few nuke CNOs and was curious how many. I remember Richardson because a promotion to CNO was surprising as once you are the Director of the Nuclear Propulsion Program that is your job until retirement. I had the privilege of sitting next to Admiral Kelso at a USSVI USS Haddo base meeting in Chattanooga. At the last USSVI convention I had an opportunity to ask Caudle about the possibility of returning to naming subs after WWII boats. His answer was in line with Rickover's "fish don't vote". It was a bit tedious as there was no list and I had to research each CNO in Wikipedia. Having done it, it seemed a waste not to share.

Admiral James L. Holloway III (1974-1978). Holloway was the first nuclear-trained officer to become Chief of Naval Operations and played a crucial role in establishing the Navy's Nuclear Powered Carrier Program.

Admiral Carlisle A.H. Trost (1986-1990) Trost served at sea on diesel-powered and nuclear submarines, including tours as executive officer of two nuclear-powered submarines and as commanding officer of a Fleet Ballistic Missile submarine.

Admiral Frank B. Kelso II (1990-1994) On completion of training, Kelso was assigned to the submarine USS Sabalo before returning to Submarine School for nuclear power training in January 1960. He then served one year in the Nuclear Power Department at the school. Subsequent tours included the pre-commissioning crew of USS Pollack, Engineering Officer aboard USS Daniel Webster and Executive Officer of USS Sculpin. From January 1969 to August 1971, Kelso served as Commanding Officer, Naval Nuclear Power School in United States Naval Training Center Bainbridge, Port Deposit, Maryland. Following tours included Commanding Officer, USS Finback; Staff of Commander, Submarine Force, United States Atlantic Fleet; and Commanding Officer, USS Bluefish.

Admiral Johnathan W. Greenert (2011-2015) Greenert's career as a submariner included assignments on board USS Flying Fish as electrical material officer, USS Tautog as electrical/operations officer, and submarine NR-1 as engineer officer. He served as executive officer of USS Michigan's Gold Crew before taking command of USS Honolulu in March 1991.

Admiral John M. Richardson (2015-2019) During his naval career, Richardson has served primarily with submarine operations, serving on USS Parche, USS Salt Lake City, and USS George C. Marshall. Prior to being Director of Nuclear Propulsion, Richardson was Commander, Naval Submarine Forces (COMSUBFOR), where he was relieved by Michael J. Connor. Richardson has commanded USS Honolulu, Submarine Development Squadron 12, Submarine Group 8, and Submarine Allied Naval Forces South. He served as the director of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program from November 2, 2012, to August 14, 2015.

Admiral Daryl Caudle (current) As a submarine officer he has commanded three nuclear-powered submarines during his career. His other posts have included commander of the Submarine Force
