New Feature: RadNet Radiation Map Now Online

We're excited to announce a major addition to the Facility Information suite: the RadNet Radiation Map.

It brings EPA's environmental radiation data together with our nuclear facility database, giving a national view of environmental radiation alongside the US nuclear fleet.

What's New?

The map pulls near-real-time data from the nationwide EPA RadNet air-monitor network and layers it with industry context:

• Environmental Dose Rates: current readings in mrem/h, with the sample time (Eastern) shown for each monitor.
• Emergency-Classification Reference Scale: an illustrative scale showing where the Unusual Event / Alert / Site Area / General Emergency thresholds would sit, to put "background" in perspective. Every reading on the map sits far in the green. That's the point.
• Planning-Zone Overlays: toggle nominal 10- and 50-mile planning-zone rings around operating plants for geographic reference.
• Facility Layers: operating plants, decommissioned sites, and other nuclear facilities, each shown distinctly.

Why We Built This

EPA publishes the raw data, but it's hard to see it in an industry context. This map puts the readings on a clean interface alongside the fleet and an illustrative reference scale, so a worker (or their family) can see at a glance that environmental radiation nationwide is sitting right where it should be.

A note on what this is: RadNet monitors measure regional environmental background, not plant effluent, and EPA sites them for population coverage, so the nearest monitor to a given plant is often tens of miles away. This is an educational/context tool, not an emergency resource. In an actual event, follow your local emergency officials and the NRC.
