Idaho National Laboratory opens Structural Properties Laboratory for advanced nuclear research

The Idaho National Laboratory opened the Structural Properties Laboratory at its Materials and Fuels Complex in late January. This Hazard Category 3 research facility features a hot cell for handling radioactive materials and advanced robotics. The project was completed on budget following four years of construction and pandemic-related supply chain challenges.

This facility represents the first new hot cell commissioned within the Department of Energy complex in over forty years. By providing dedicated space to test and analyze reactor materials, the laboratory supports the operational longevity of existing plants and the development of future reactor designs. It will serve as a central hub for the Nuclear Science User Facilities program.
