Five U.S. Companies Could Get Plutonium From Dismantled U.S. Nuclear Warheads

The Department of Energy is negotiating with five nuclear startups to provide 20 metric tons of surplus plutonium from dismantled warheads. The agency intends for these companies to convert the weapons grade material into fuel for future reactors. Oklo, Exodys Energy, SHINE Technologies, Standard Nuclear, and Flibe Energy are involved.

This initiative follows executive orders that halted the previous dilute and dispose program for surplus plutonium. By repurposing this material, the government aims to address fuel supply constraints for advanced reactor designs. The shift represents a change in federal policy regarding the management of nuclear liabilities and the utilization of existing stockpiles for commercial power generation.

QuoteThe Trump administration is reportedly in talks with five companies to provide old plutonium to convert into fuel for future nuclear reactors.
