News Wire

Nebraska officials identified four communities as optimal locations for small modular reactor facilities following a state-funded feasibility study. Meanwhile, Minnesota lawmakers approved funding for a study to evaluate new nuclear construction, a move intended to support the state's transition to carbon-free energy and potentially lift an existing moratorium on new nuclear plants.

These developments reflect a broader trend of states reevaluating nuclear energy to meet grid reliability and decarbonization goals. In Indiana, the state is pursuing regulatory authority over radioactive materials through the NRC Agreement State Program. Additionally, North Carolina is considering legislation that would link the retirement of baseload power plants to the approval of new nuclear replacement capacity.

QuoteStudies, regulatory control, and legislation are among the items Nebraska, Minnesota, Indiana, and North Carolina tackled in the month of May regarding nuclear energy.

Nebraska: Four communities in Nebraska have been identified as the best landing spots for future small modular reactor facilities: Sutherland, Beatrice, Brownville, and Norfolk. A siting feasibility study concluded that these communities ranked above a dozen others on the basis of current infrastructure and siting criteria.

The study was done in two phases: the first identified 16 communities, and the second narrowed down the list by going in depth. According to the study, the technical evaluations done in the second phase were based on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's criteria for siting a nuclear power plant facility.
