I'm currently going to school at Linn State Tech for Radiation Protection. I have a 3.0 right now. One of my options when I graduate is to go into the Navy and become a Navy Nuke. I'm strongly considering joining, but that also makes me nervous.

I know I need high scores on the ASVAB, but I don't know exactly how high, so I don't know where to set my goals. I've taken two of the 40-question practice ASVABs so far. In the Mathematics, Arithmatic, and Paragraph Comprehension sections the lowest I've gotten was a 90%... But I'm not doing so hot on the Word Knowledge secion (apparently I need to read a dictionary). Do they look at the scores from certain sections more than others for the Nuke program, or is it just you need a high score overall?

Also, is there anything extra I could do to help ensure I actually get into the program if I choose to enlist?

Any kind of advice would be helpful here. I'm pretty much looking to just learn as much as I can about the Navy Nuke program before I make up my mind!

You don't need to go to college to join Navy Nuke. Your program is setup for commercial Rad Protection. Quite different.

You don't need a single college class to enlist as a nuke. Much less a degree.

I know I need high scores on the ASVAB, but I don't know exactly how high, so I don't know where to set my goals.

The lowest ASVAB score I've ever heard of was an 82

Talk to a recruiter.
and be sure to explore your options going officer. Is this an associates degree?

It all depends on the individual line scores that determines whether you can be a nuke or not...

I have had an applicant that scored a 85 that I could not make a nuke and I have had a guy cut a 62 that made it in...

SO, check out the link that they posted about the ASVAB and remember that not everyone on here is an expert and that some people (like the guy above) have no idea what they are talking about. (2006-2010 I was a Nuke enlisted and officer recruiter).

a 62???  How is that possible... good at math, terrible (!) at english? lol  I also dont recall him saying he was an expert, merely conveying his experience.

Anywho, here are the MINIMUM scores required.

VE+AR+MK+NAPT = 290 (with minimum 50 NAPT score)
or

 or
VE+AR+MK+MC = 252 (No NAPT required)
 or
AR+MK+EI+GS = 252 (No NAPT required)

    General Science (GS)
    Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)
    Word Knowledge (WK)
    Paragraph Comprehension (PC)
    Assembling Objects (AO)
    Auto and Shop Information (AS)
    Mathematics Knowledge (MK)
