MEPS Nuke contract question
« on: Jun 02, 2012, 11:59 »
So I am joining the Navy Nuke program and I am going to MEPS tomorrow. I had a question about the contract. I understand there are three main areas that make up the Nuke program: Mechanical, electrical, and electronics. I have been already approved to join the nuke program but I was wondering if I pick my specific area of work i.e electronics when I sign the contract or whether that is decided later. I asked my recruiter and he said that you sign up for the nuke program and you decide what you want to do later. Is this true? I only want to join the nuke program if I am guaranteed to make it into the electronic works section. So yeah, do I make sure my contract says Nuke Program electrical at MEPS or is that done later? And if it is done later do I get to pick where i go or am i assigned?

I'd bet something pretty that this has been answered already.

However, new phrase: "Needs of the Navy"

You'll get to make your preference at boot camp. I don't know how much emphasis that has, it could be just be there to make you feel better, but there are 1000 things they do to point to the contrary..so?

You'll get assigned Machinist Mate (Mechanical Operator), Electricians Mate (Electrical Operator), or Electronics Technician (what you think you want) and then you'll be stuck with it forever.

I don't think you can get that worked in to your contract.

My opinion.... I wouldn't let this stop you as you will get roughly the same training in the end anyways when you qualify supervisory watch stations or enter the civilian side of the house.

Good Luck!

Yea you have no chance at working it into your contract. Even when the economy was good and they were having trouble filling their quotas they still wouldn't let you work it into your contract unless you chose to be an MM and that wasn't even really guaranteed either. Like Drayer said it's all about "Needs of the Navy".
