Does anyone know of any plants that have thier shielding packages intact within containment while online? Please reply to Mitchell_McCormick@apsc.com

Yes, Pilgrim, a BWR has installed "permanent shielding" in their Drywell.  We are in the process of an engineering analysis to do the same.  In the mean time, ours is not installed, but the engineers have given the approval to "store" our shielding on the elevations of our Drywell to reduce the dose of just carrying the shielding from its' locations at shut down / start up.  I know there are several PWR's that store the shielding inside Containment during operation, as long as it meets seismic requirements.  I think Vogtle has been doing it for years.

I believe Diablo Canyon has some permanent sheilding.  Also, Nine Mile Point, both units have been and will continue to install permanent sheilding in various areas of the steam affected areas.
It is what it is!

Oyster Creek - a BWR known as a "Hot" plant has successfully installed "Permanent" shielding as has Perry, another BWR.

this question would best be put to INPO which would gladly help.  Post in the Nuclear Professional.  NEI may be a possible source of info.. and putting it out on the nuclear net will get some reply.. lots to consider-degradation, postulated accident,ECCS, etc.. naturally, lots of engineering work to get the approval-

Permanent  shielding installed on the recirc. suction and discharge piping at the Fermi station. Engineered supports on the whip restraints just off the 90 deg elbow on the suction line and just below the header on the disch. side. Could give you a contact at the plant if you are interested but I'll have to ask him first. We figure alot of dose savings and are interested in expanding the program, and will do so in the fall 04.

Palisades uses the gray blankets.
DC Cook just installed shield walls in both of the units.
If you are thinking of doing any of these shield walls call the ALARA group @ Cook because they came up with some great ways on saving dose on the installation.

Good Luck. :)

Wolf Creek has heat resistant blankets hanging on the letdown line in containment.

Melrose

Nine Mile 1 has perm. PB in the DW, McGuire has installed supports for PB, don't know when the project will be complete or if it'll be done to all three sites...
