I am a journeyman electrician trying to learn how to work the shutdowns. I am willing to travel anywere in the US. Can anybody give me any advice or instruction about how to get started and who to contact? I am clueless as to what to do.

Start by contacting the Business Agent from the Local that supports the nuclear site nearest to your residence.  It should not be difficilt to figure out who that person is.

You can also contact some of the companies that provide contract labor. Shaw, DZ Altalntic, Bartlett and I am sure there are a few others. I would just call them.

You should know that the life of an outage sparkie is short.  The majority of them are hired to do two specific tasks, install TP&L and do PMs on weld machines and what-not.  After that, the majority are released, often before the first week of the outage is in the books.

A small band of local hands may stay around to troubleshoot and fix TP&L problems (I can hear the radio blaring now..."Sparkie in the Can pick up!!!") but the house accepts responsibility for demob.

If you are new and a traveler, your chances of getting more than a week or two per outage are slim.

thank you for the advice. will be making calls tomorrow, leaving to sign books next week. ill take what i can get, jobs are very slim in my area. just had a meeting with my b.a. today and picked up a list of outage places and dates.
