Here is another example of misunderstanding the risks at nuclear facilities especially the old Manhattan project facilities in remediation and demolition. When there is a mix of hazards the press automatically goes to the radiological risk just because it is present. I was a waste engineer for the remediation of a million square foot building at Y-12 prior to its demolition. There was beryllium, asbestos, PCBs, and mercury among other hazards besides the radiological risk. It was only place I have ever had to wear a respirator for airborne mercury. These are buildings that were built and operated during a war (1940s) effort long before OSHA and RCRA regulations (1970s) that governs these hazards.

My personal emphasis to all newbies, nubbs, interns, etc. as far as leaving everyday as you came in, was by far industrial safety. I think every fatality at a nuclear plant has been to date attributed to an industrial accident or natural causes. Shrimp on the barbie for all!

Meanwhile the vets and police get everything on a silver platter.  Keep collecting their "work-related" disability checks for sleep apnea, hearing loss, sore back, and fibromyalgia. And why am I bombed with television adds for every county in the area offering free pick-up rides...
