DTE’s Fermi 2 nuclear power plant shut down after small fire

Operators at the Fermi 2 nuclear plant initiated an emergency shutdown on May 18, 2026, following a fire in the turbine building. The blaze was extinguished within seven minutes, and the facility remains in a safe and stable condition. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is monitoring DTE Energy as the utility assesses the cause of the fire and performs necessary repairs before returning the 1,200-megawatt reactor to service.
