Surface Contamination Monitor
The SCM was developed by Shonka Research Associates, Inc., and uses a patented Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) that is capable of establishing where along the detector a pulse is sensed (the system is described in NUREG/CR-6450). Although the system can determine the position down to millimeters, it bins the information in 2" increments. The result is that the long detector acts like a series of seamless 2" proportional counters.
