Akron-based FirstEnergy Corp, operators of the power plant, notified the Emergency Operations Center in Kirtland, Ohio, that an instrumentation malfunction caused an emergency to be declared at 3:44 am. Tuesday, July 20, 2004. The event was terminated just after 9 am. and the plant returned to normal operating status.
