Looking to get out

Hello,
I have a few questions about getting out of the navy.  When I get out I will have just over 8 years as a surface MM non-ELT.  I will be PPWS, QAS, Planner, I will have a BS in human resource management, a MS in the same, and an MBA.  I have tried to set myself up to have as many opportunities as I can.  The first question is what nuke jobs will i qualify for with this current skill set?  The second question was that if I were to get a nuke job how much of a difference would the BS form Thomas Edison make?  Thanks in advance.

There are 9 guys here who I helped get jobs, 2 more I am currently helping and 1 who is deciding which offer he wants to take.

What they all have in common is first they helped themselves and showed a bit of initiative instead of just posting what amounts to a resume with a bunch of meaningless experience.

I wouldn't worry about getting out. Just work on your resume making sure that its in non navy English concentrating on the actual skills you possess as opposed to the titles you held. Unlike what Broadzilla seems to think, commercial nuclear power still values our experience and as long as you can pass the POSS test, you will be just fine. Also don't bother with recruiters, they are no help, all of interviews and subsequent offers were from me researching where I wanted to live findining a company and applying on their website.

As far as I can tell by the description you've given (me being non-Navy term savy) I'd say you could definately have a future in the Operations department of a commercial plant.  They would like to see you as a STA (Shift Technical Advisor) then maybe going on to be a licensed Control Room Supervisor.

To me it makes him rounded in a sense, but I dont honestly know.  Perhaps the nuclear background and the degrees get you into the business, HR, or other realm.  I say try the many companies websites and take a peek at what is there first.  Then ask if your skill set applies to what the company desires.  I am afraid many here will not be able to predict your future quite so well with as little as we know about you.  To take a little edge off of BZ's comments but agree, dig a little, let us know what you found and ask a more directed question.

You know, I still find it funny that folks react the way they do to BZ's "search" posts. It is so predictable, you can almost set a watch to it. If the thread is titled something about getting out, you can be 99% sure that it is going to be questions that have been covered countless times, and the very next post is going to be Mike sternly informing the person about searching. I just don't understand how this comes as a surprise or shock to anyone anymore. In the end, he means well and is willing to help anyone that is willing to put in a little effort themselves. That is all he is trying to convey, and sometime it has to be done with a little tough love. Shouldn't be the shocker that it is everytime this comes around.

Actually ask anyone I work with, I'm exactly like this in real life if someone doesn't have their ducks in a row. If you have a question and have no ability to find the answer I will gladly help, if you simply don't understand again I'll help. But if you're too lazy to even look for the info yourself, then I'll be more than happy to set you straight, and I'm usually not nice about it.

However the pass rate in the industry right now is about 55 to 60%. Navy Nuke Instant is roughly 40 to 50%. Some utilities are putting 12 to 15 people up and getting 3 Licenses and YES these are people who have passed the Utility Exam. The test has gotten a lot harder.

The training is roughly about 380% tougher than the entire training you had in the Navy. The hours are longer, that is if you want to get your License. To get my SRO Instant I put in around 40 to 50 hours additional a week and I already knew how to get a license.

So has anyone offered any REAL insight to the original questions yet?  His first question seemed like one that has not been answered and admittedly I dont have any experience to offer on this.  The second question about the Thomas Edison degree has been covered many times.

I challenged the replies by BZ and others, not because his "search" comments anger or upset me, but because he and others have offered no real insight to what seems to be a legitmate question regarding a navy nuclear background coupled with some under and post grad HR degrees/MBA and what this qualifies a candidate to do.

Am I suprised by BZ's response?  No.  I also agree that 99% of the time his comments are insightful and helpful.  Would he act this way in person?  Who cares!   For all I know BZ is some overweight kid in a basement or is likely who he says he is. 

So do HR degrees, MBA's, and surface mechanic experience mean anything in commercial nuclear power?  Seperately, the MM thing does.  Collectively??  Lets see what the folks have got out there.

Alright... I can not help but reply.  I am an SRO at the "oldest operating nuclear plant" in the US. 

1.  Your BS/MBA does no good in the nuclear world if you are trying to get into ops.  Unless you have 1 year of Calc. based Physics and Math you can not be an STA.
2.  A Thomas Edison degree is a technical degree and I know a few SRO who have them.  Once you have an SRO license noone cares what/where you got your degree.
3. SRO class is approximately 380% harder then Navy Nuke class.  I had qualified on 2 different Navy reactors and this was by far the hardest endeavour ever.  Considering I did not have EO experience, I had to learn the plant by doing what a nuke does best, walk down the systems, prints, procedures, talk to the operators, design base documents etc.  I put in a minimum of 25-30 hours per week studying and it paid off.
4.  Jobs you qualify for in ops: With technical degree and experience,       
   a. Instant SRO(right time/place to get it), salary 85-120k/yr and bonuses.
   b. Equipment Operator - Hourly, 80-100K+/yr with overtime.  Pass the POSS test and you are good to go.  Great job, learn the plant, get to turn stuff, switch breakers, climb all over the drywell, and overall fun.
   c.  I am sure there are other jobs you could get with a BS/MBA degree.  It is possible to get into training, in which case I would obtain Master Training Specialist if you have it.  A lot of cases though you need civ. power plant experience.

I agree 101% with Mike, He helped me with answers 4 years ago and it helped me get a job.  You have to be willing to go to the utility and work incredibly hard.  It is all about how much you want it....

So you got your license? That's awesome, congratulations.

I actually prefer nights especially during an outage, but after 4 weeks they get a bit old especially when an outage is running behind.

I did answer. I said his HR Degree meant jack s**t in a nuke job. HR jobs are not nuke jobs. His MM Experience helps him.

And a nice search would have answered 99.9% of this question.

Actually you said his HR degree wouldnt help in a transient.  I agree.  But there have to be jobs that out there in the nuclear world where this is moot and perhaps HR/Business/MBA degrees help.

And a search would have helped answer 50% of his questions, the one regarding the BSAST from Thomas Edison.

I enjoyed nights, my wife and kids hated it.
