Center for Used Fuel Research selects two technologies for demonstration of auto

The Department of Energy selected Guidedwave and Sensible Photonics to demonstrate acoustic emission technologies for monitoring used nuclear fuel canisters. These companies will undergo pre-demonstration testing at Idaho National Laboratory this summer to support future aging management programs. The project aims to replace periodic manual inspections with continuous, remote monitoring systems for dry storage facilities at commercial nuclear power plants.

The selections address a critical industry need related to used nuclear fuel storage. Nuclear utilities are required under U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations (10 CFR Part 72) to maintain aging management programs for all used nuclear fuel storage systems.
