NNSA Administrator Williams Breaks Ground on Cutting-Edge Nuclear Testbed at Oak

The National Nuclear Security Administration has begun construction on the 21,000-square-foot Advanced Testbed and Operations Learning Laboratory at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Scheduled for completion in 2028, the facility will train personnel to monitor foreign uranium enrichment activities. This project aims to bolster domestic nonproliferation expertise and support the development of technical infrastructure required to detect and attribute potential adversary nuclear weapons programs.

WASHINGTON – The Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced the launch of a new state-of-the-art 21,000-square-foot facility designed to safeguard the nation from nuclear proliferation at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The Advanced Testbed and Operations Learning Laboratory (ATOLL) will develop critical workforce expertise and capabilities essential to monitoring foreign weapons-grade uranium production activities. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2028.
