I learned today that one of my favorite people, Eric Laning, passed away in March. Eric was a mentor to me. He was one of two men who encouraged me to take the leap from decon to RP, and then on to Rad Engineer. The world is worse without him.

Eric J. Laning, age 64, passed away suddenly on Thursday, March 26th, 2026. He is survived by his loving wife Kim; his children, Nathaniel, Mason, and Erica Laning; his two sisters, Janet Laning and Karen Laning-Nielsen; his constant K-9 companion, Comet; and a host of loving family and friends. Eric was born and raised in Riverside, New Jersey, and had a special love for the Eagles. Go Birds! He was preceded in death by his older brother George and his loving mother Janet Matlack-Laning.

Eric had a long and distinguished career in Radiation Protection, beginning as a Registered Radiological Control Technician in 1981 and rising through various industry positions to Vice President of Health Physics Services for Perma-Fix Environmental Services in 2021. He approached his work with dedication and integrity, earning the respect of colleagues and friends alike. He combined outstanding technical knowledge with strong personal and managerial skills, was responsible for over $100M in successful projects, and especially excelled in mentoring young technicians and engineers.

Eric was a devoted father whose greatest joy was his family, whether coaching soccer, cheering at a swim meet, watching Philadelphia sports, or sharing stories of a good meal. He will be remembered for his genuine directness, fierce loyalty, and the countless moments of laughter he brought to those around him.
