Arizona Public Service, Salt River Project, and Tucson Electric Power are conducting a joint siting study to evaluate potential locations for new nuclear generation in Arizona. The utilities are screening sites, including former coal plant locations, to address rising electricity demand. This study is scheduled for completion within six months.

The findings will inform decisions regarding the pursuit of an Early Site Permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The utilities are currently reviewing both small modular reactors and large-scale designs to meet long-term grid requirements. Future project viability depends on industry progress in cost predictability, supply chain stability, and the availability of financing for new nuclear infrastructure.

The study will use a phased screening methodology to narrow down areas in the state to a short list of leading candidates, culminating with the selection of a preferred site.
