Water resources and a potential nuclear power plant are among current priorities for Colorado Springs Utilities

Colorado Springs Utilities is conducting a yearlong feasibility study to determine if nuclear energy is a viable option for the region. CEO Travas Deal identified the site of the Ray Nixon coal-fired power plant, which is scheduled for retirement in 2032, as a potential location for an advanced small modular reactor. The utility is currently evaluating technology, costs, and financing plans to meet growing electricity demand and state carbon emission goals.

The site for a possible future nuclear power facility and a reservoir expansion were discussed at this week's annual state of the utility event.

After a warm and historically dry winter, Colorado Springs will receive the lowest amount of water from its three watersheds than ever, but the city's utility said it's prepared. That was the message delivered by Colorado Springs Utilities CEO Travas Deal in his annual State of the Utilities address, where he also talked about the possibility of nuclear power.
