Wyoming uranium miner wants to expand aquifer drilling

Uranium Energy Corp has requested a permit amendment from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality to expand aquifer exemptions at its Christensen Ranch in-situ recovery site. The proposed 352-acre addition would allow for increased injection of fluids to dissolve uranium ore in the K sandstone aquifer. State regulators are accepting public comments on the expansion through August 3.

State officials are asking for public comment on an 11% expansion to the mine's existing operating area.

A uranium mining company is asking the state's top environmental regulator to approve expanded operations in the Powder River Basin.

Uranium Energy Corp restarted the Christensen Ranch in-situ uranium wellfield mine in 2024 and plans to ramp up production of U3O4, or "yellowcake." Although yellowcake is radioactive, it undergoes two separate enrichment processes — both outside Wyoming — before it becomes fuel for nuclear power plants.
