Three Arkansas-based entrepreneurs have formed Blue Diamond Atomics to pursue the development of nuclear power sites within the state. The startup aims to utilize fast reactor technology to recycle spent nuclear fuel rods, potentially addressing long-term waste storage challenges while meeting rising electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence and grid expansion.

The proposal shifts from traditional thermal reactors to fast reactors that use liquid metal coolants to process spent fuel. While the developers claim this approach reduces radioactive half-lives and improves efficiency, the technology remains largely untested at a commercial scale. Success depends on overcoming regulatory hurdles, securing investor confidence, and proving the economic viability of a domestic fuel recycling infrastructure.

Two physicists and an engineer want to foster the next generation of nuclear power in the state.

The two nuclear reactors at Arkansas Nuclear One in Russellville came online in the 1970s and '80s. Since then, the subject of additional nuclear power plants in the state comes and goes.

But the landscape, like technology, has changed, and the demand on the country's electrical grid, which had been flat for many years, has started rising again. With the advent of artificial intelligence and its insatiable need for electricity and the prediction that the country's overall electricity consumption will grow by half in the next quarter century, nuclear energy is getting another look.
