Core Power and the U.S. Maritime Administration signed a memorandum of cooperation to develop a framework for nuclear-powered merchant shipping. The partnership aims to begin construction on the first vessels by 2028. This initiative seeks to integrate U.S. nuclear expertise with allied shipbuilding capacity to establish a domestic fleet.

The project addresses the need for a complete commercial system including regulatory, insurance, and workforce standards for maritime nuclear propulsion. By shifting away from conventional marine fuels, the industry aims to improve energy security and operational efficiency. This effort also serves as a strategic response to international competition in the global shipping sector.

Core Power said it is targeting first construction "from 2028" under a newly announced federal-private cooperation framework to accelerate the commercial, industrial and regulatory pathway for a future fleet of US-flagged nuclear-powered merchant ships. ;

The US Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration (MARAD) and Core Power (US) Inc announced their signature of a non-exclusive Memorandum of Cooperation to collaborate on maritime nuclear frameworks in Washington DC on Monday. It follows a recent Request for Information from the maritime administration for a commercially viable, system-centric approach to nuclear power in the US marine transportation system.
