The Department of Energy has amended its record of decision for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant to extend operations by 50 years. The agency plans to excavate seven additional underground disposal panels to accommodate defense-related transuranic waste through 2083. This expansion supports the continued disposal of waste within the existing volume limits.

The extension addresses the loss of original disposal panels due to ground instability and radiological contamination. By maintaining the facility, the DOE ensures a path for legacy waste currently stored at various generator sites. These operations require new surface infrastructure and ongoing coordination with state regulators regarding the prioritization of waste shipments from specific facilities.

The WIPP site, located near Carlsbad, N.M., is a mined repository that has been excavated 2,100 feet below the surface in a prehistoric salt deposit. In 1998, after analyzing potential environmental impacts, the DOE decided to dispose of as much as 175,600 cubic meters (6.2 million cubic feet) of defense-generated transuranic (TRU) waste at WIPP, treated and packaged to meet environmental standards for the site.
