The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Baltimore District has finished all field activities for the decommissioning and dismantlement of the former SM-1 nuclear power plant at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Workers removed radioactive materials, dismantled the structure, and restored the site footprint to a graded landscape following a project that began with planning in 2014.

The SM-1 reactor began operations in 1957 as the Army's first nuclear plant and supplied power to the commercial grid before its deactivation in 1973. The successful completion of this project provides the military and the broader nuclear industry with practical data regarding the full lifecycle management and ultimate dismantlement of early generation nuclear facilities.
