Terrestrial Energy delivered a technical report to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission regarding graphite usage within its Integral Molten Salt Reactor design. The company is developing a commercial Integral Molten Salt Reactor, or IMSR, based on technology previously demonstrated at U.S. national laboratories. Graphite has been used as a moderator in nuclear reactors for decades, the report says. To obtain a commercial license, however, Terrestrial Energy must demonstrate the safety of each reactor component, including graphite and the liquid salt used as a coolant.
