SOAR event connects Knott County residents with nuclear energy jobs

The Shaping Our Appalachian Region organization hosted an employment event in Knott County to connect local trade workers with positions in the nuclear sector. Representatives noted that companies frequently recruit from the area due to the reliability and experience of former coal miners and construction personnel. These roles often require traveling to various domestic and international nuclear facilities.

Eastern Kentuckians with a strong background in trades such as coal mining and construction met with career-readiness professionals Thursday afternoon to explore positions in nuclear energy.

Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) has reportedly sent people around the world to work in nuclear power positions. the organization's chief operating officer, Joshua Ball, said the work ethic of Eastern Kentuckians is why companies continue to call.

"They're bought in. They're not just bought into the story of Eastern Kentucky, they're bought into the people. Who we are, what we are, how we work, and that's easy to tell to those companies. People that show up early, they stay late, they find a way," Ball said.
