Projected future hiring needs for HP's

Has anyone seen a good projection for hiring needs for HP techs over next 10 years or so?   Do you have link to the reference?

Perhaps a bit of background about my question. I got into a conversation regarding how many techs the industry as a whole needed in next 10 years or so.  They were interested in whether there was enough demand to set up a college program.

The most recent information I reviewed stated that about 2700 technicians are currently in FIELD POSITIONS.

Projected need for the next ten years, if the industry remains stagnate, 40%, or about 1080 techs.

Add another 15%, or 405 techs, if the proposed plants make it to their warranty run!

Don't be fooled by the numbers!  The 1080 jobs are simply a trade off for replacing the aging work force.  The actual growth in the Health Physics Technician sector, is realistically projected at about 20% TOTAL, over the next ten years!

Sort of explains why six technical collages have fire up Radiation Protection Programs!

I talked with a college administrator at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio. That is east of Cleveland about 35 minutes. I have seen different teams of 3 guys come through the RP department, from Lakeland every week. I have been here for 10 weeks, you do the math. Read the description below, and their estimation answers your question about the next 10 years for total workers.

30 percent of the employees at FirstEnergy's Perry Nuclear Power Plant are 50 years or older. The need to train a new generation of nuclear engineers and technicians is not unique to the Perry Plant. It is an industry problem with statistics indicating a need for 90,000 new employees over the next decade.

To help address this problem on a local level, the Perry Nuclear Power Plant and Lakeland established a 2-year associates degree in Nuclear Engineering Technology.

The technical course curriculum is designed to train students to become technicians in operations, mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, chemical laboratory, health physics, and instrumentation and control. The program also prepares students for employment as a maintenance technician in any manufacturing or production facility. Over 100 power plants exist in the United States and graduates of this program would be trained to work at any domestic nuclear power plant.

In addition to classroom studies, students spend 12 weeks in the summer working at the Perry Plant in a paid internship. Students will be paid $13-$15 per hour and the salary from this internship will essentially pay for the cost of the tuition and books for the entire program. Students will also earn 2 credit hours towards the completion of their degree. During the internship, students rotate through the plant's Maintenance, Operations, Radiation Protection and Chemistry departments. This gives the students an opportunity to see first hand the variety and nature of the different functions within a nuclear plant.

To be qualified for this degree program, students must pass a background check and drug test.


Degree Specifications
A total of 70 credit hours are completed consecutively over a 21-month (four-semester) period. This is a full-time day program. The program will prepare students for employment in selected areas within a nuclear power plant. The technical course curriculum is designed around direct specifications from the nuclear power industry. A summer-paid field experience is provided in cooperation with the Perry Nuclear Power Plant. | Program Curriculum

Field Experience
Following Semester 2, students will be required to participate in a ten-week (forty hours per week) compensated and evaluated field experience at the Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Perry, Ohio. Students will be exposed to a variety of specializations within the nuclear power plant, and will utilize the skills learned during their first two semesters. Students will be paid between $13.00 - $15.00 per hour, depending upon the job assignment. Field experience will begin in June and end in August. In observance of Independence Day, students will not be required to work the week of July 4th.   
 
Program Tuition & Lab Fees

Potential Employment
Based on a student's grades, skills, and attitude, employment opportunities may exist with FirstEnergy upon graduation. Current starting salaries range from $16.00 to $20.00 per hour. Overtime is also compensated.
