Construction began in 1975. In 1988 the TVA board suspended the project, with Unit 1 about 88 percent complete and Unit 2 about 58 percent complete, after roughly $6 billion had been spent. The NRC terminated the construction permits in 2006 and reinstated them as a terminated application in 2009. TVA declared the site surplus in 2016, and Nuclear Development LLC won an auction for it with a $111 million bid on November 14, 2016. A court ruled in August 2021 that TVA was not required to complete the sale.
