Site work began in 1964. Bugey 1, a gas-cooled, graphite-moderated (UNGG) unit, began construction in December 1965, was connected to the grid in April 1972, and was permanently shut down on 27 May 1994. Bugey 2 through 5 are pressurized water reactors of the CP0 design, started between 1972 and 1974 and first connected to the grid between May 1978 and July 1979. During the heat wave of July 2003, waste heat was discharged directly into the Rhône on two occasions.
