CERN has no power or research reactor; its work is done with particle accelerators. The first, the 600 MeV Synchrocyclotron, started in 1957, followed by the Proton Synchrotron in 1959. The Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest accelerator, first circulated beams in 2008.
