The site had two reactors. Gentilly 1 was a prototype CANDU-BWR rated at 250 MWe, with vertical pressure tubes and light-water coolant. It was connected to the grid on 5 April 1971 and shut down on 1 June 1977 after a record of technical problems. Gentilly 2 is a CANDU 6 heavy-water reactor supplied by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. Construction began in 1973, and it was connected to the grid on 4 December 1982 and commissioned on 1 October 1983. It was shut down on 28 December 2012, after a planned refurbishment was cancelled in October 2012.
